Finding Strength: How to Trust God When Life Gets Hard
Life is a journey filled with both mountain peaks and deep valleys. Whether you are facing a financial crisis, a health battle, or just the heavy weight of uncertainty, it is natural to feel overwhelmed. But as a believer, you have access to a power that doesn’t depend on your circumstances: the power of trusting God.
Trusting God is not about ignoring your pain or pretending life is easy. It is about choosing to believe that God is who He says He is, even when your eyes tell you otherwise.
Trusting God is difficult because we often want to see the “finish line” before we take the first step. But the Bible gives us a different perspective:
Job’s Lesson: Job lost everything, yet he didn’t demand an explanation. He trusted that God’s character was higher than his own understanding.
David’s Lesson: David was hunted and scared, yet he constantly wrote about God as his “refuge.” He realized that safety isn’t found in a lack of trouble, but in the presence of God during the trouble.
Jesus’ Lesson: Even Jesus, in His moment of greatest agony in the Garden, surrendered His own desires to His Father. He showed us that the most powerful thing you can do when you are hurting is to go to God with your rawest, deepest honesty.
Trust is a muscle. If you don’t use it, it stays weak. Here is how you can train that muscle every day:
1. Keep a Record of Faithfulness It is easy to forget how God has helped you in the past when you are worried about the future. Keep a journal of “God moments”—times He provided, comforted, or guided you. When you are in a storm, read those entries. Remembering past grace builds future hope.
2. Turn Your Worry into a Conversation Most of us pray only when we are desperate. Instead, try “listening prayer.” After you pour out your needs, sit in silence for a minute. Read a verse like Psalm 46:1 and imagine God speaking those words directly to you. Prayer is meant to be a dialogue, not just a grocery list of requests.
3. Saturate Your Mind with Truth When you feel overwhelmed, your mind will naturally spin with “what-ifs.” You have to replace those thoughts with truth. Memorize one verse—like Isaiah 41:10—and repeat it when you feel fear rising. Think of Scripture as a filter for your anxious thoughts.
4. Lean on “Living Stones” You were never meant to carry your burdens in isolation. Find a community of believers who aren’t afraid to be vulnerable. When you tell someone, “I’m struggling to trust God right now,” their faith can help carry you until yours feels strong again. This is what it means to “bear one another’s burdens.”
5. Embrace the “Not Knowing” We often think trust means we will eventually get the answer we want. But true trust is the ability to say, “God, I don’t know what You are doing, but I know who You are.” Surrender isn’t giving up; it is giving your heavy load to the only One strong enough to carry it.
Scripture “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1
Encouragement If you are in a storm today, I want you to know that you are not being forgotten—you are being held. Trusting God in the middle of a struggle is an act of incredible courage. You don’t have to be strong on your own; you just have to stay close to the One who is. Take a deep breath, hand your worries over to Him, and remember that He has brought you this far, and He will not leave you now. You are safe in His hands.
Trusting God is the most reliable anchor you have in a shifting world. By grounding yourself in the Bible, staying honest in your prayers, and leaning on your community, you can find a peace that remains steady even when life feels like a raging storm.
Remember: God’s character never changes, even when your situation does.
Practice: Make trust a daily habit by recording His faithfulness and reading His promises.
Surrender: You don’t need to understand the “why” to trust the “Who.”
Keep your heart anchored in Him. He is working behind the scenes, He is hearing your prayers, and He is walking with you every step of the way.
