Understanding Baptism

What is baptism? - Water, Spirit & Fire

Today, we are looking at a topic that has been important to Christians for a long time: baptism. What is it? Why do we do it? And why does it sometimes look different in different churches? Let’s explore this together.

The Curious Seeker

Imagine a young man named Samuel. He grew up in a small town and watched people get baptized in the river behind his church. Some were fully dipped under the water, while others had water sprinkled on their heads.

Samuel asked his grandmother, “Why do they do that?” She smiled and said, “It is a way to show everyone your faith, my boy. It is a sign of a fresh start with God.”

Samuel wanted to know more. Was it just about the water, or was something deeper happening?

What is Baptism?

Baptism is a way of using water to show that your heart has been washed clean and you are dedicated to God. It is an outward way of showing what has happened on the inside—a choice to live for Him.

There are three main ways people talk about baptism:

  • Water Baptism: The most common form, showing that you have turned away from your old life and have been made clean.

  • Baptism of the Holy Spirit: Receiving God’s power and presence, just as Jesus promised.

  • Baptism by Fire: A way of describing the difficult tests or challenges that help us grow and become stronger in our faith.

Different Churches, Different Ways

Samuel visited a friend’s church and saw them baptize babies by sprinkling water. This was different from his own church, where they only baptized adults by putting them fully under the water.

He learned that some churches choose full dipping because it reminds them of Jesus being buried and coming back to life. Other churches use sprinkling to show the washing away of sin. He realized that even though the methods are different, the heart of it is the same: it is a public promise to follow God.

Is Baptism Necessary to be Saved?

Samuel wondered, “Do I have to be baptized to go to heaven?” He read a verse in the Bible: “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16).

But then he remembered the man on the cross next to Jesus in Luke 23. That man was promised a place in heaven even though he was never baptized. This taught Samuel that being saved comes through believing in Jesus, not just the act of water baptism.

  • Some groups believe baptism is necessary for salvation.

  • Others see it as a beautiful step of obedience after you have already been saved.

The Power of the Holy Spirit

Samuel read about the day of Pentecost in the book of Acts. The Holy Spirit came down on the followers of Jesus, and they were filled with new power. He learned that many Christians believe in this special experience with the Holy Spirit that changes how we live and speak for God.

Being “Born Again”

You might hear the word “regeneration.” That is just a fancy way of saying “born again.” It means the Holy Spirit has come into your life and changed your heart. Baptism is like a picture; it shows the world what God has already done inside of you.

Samuel’s Choice

In the end, Samuel chose to get baptized. He didn’t do it to earn his way to heaven. He did it as a way to say “yes” to Jesus. As he stepped into the water, he thought about Romans 6:4, which says that we are buried with Christ and raised to live a brand-new life. When he came out of the water, he felt a deep sense of joy.
