Have you ever wondered how to know if God is speaking to you? Many of us want to hear His guidance, know His will, and feel His presence, but we aren’t sure how it works. Hearing God isn’t about hearing a loud, booming voice from the sky. Most of the time, it is a quiet, gentle connection that grows as you build your relationship with Him.
The Bible is the most important way God speaks to us. If you want to know what God thinks, what He loves, and how He wants you to live, this is where you look.
Make it a habit: Just like you check your phone for messages, check the Bible to hear from God.
Study and think: Don’t just rush through it. Read a few verses and think about what they mean for your life today.
Put it into practice: The goal isn’t just to know what the Bible says; it is to do what it says. When you live out His Word, you hear His voice more clearly.
When you choose to follow Jesus, God puts His Spirit inside you. This is like having an internal guide.
Spend time in quiet: We live in a noisy world. If you want to hear a whisper, you have to be quiet. Take time to sit in silence and just be with God.
Listen for the nudge: The Holy Spirit often speaks through a “still, small voice”—a feeling of peace, a sudden urge to be kind, or a gentle “no” when you are about to do something wrong.
Test what you hear: God will never tell you to do something that goes against the Bible. If you have a feeling that feels like it might be from God, always compare it to the Bible. If it contradicts His Word, it isn’t from Him.
Be Patient: Learning to hear God is a skill, just like learning an instrument. At first, it might be hard to tell if it is His voice or just your own thoughts. Keep practicing, keep reading, and keep praying. You will get better at it with time.
Obey the Small Things: When you feel a gentle nudge to do something—like being kind to a neighbor or telling the truth—just do it. Obedience is like a muscle; the more you use it, the stronger your connection to God becomes.
Ask for Wise Counsel: God often speaks through the people He has placed in your life. If you are confused, talk to a mature Christian friend or mentor you trust. They can help you see if you are heading in the right direction.
Stay Open: God is creative. He can speak to you through the Bible, through a friend, through a song, or even through your life circumstances. Keep your heart open, but always keep your Bible open too, to make sure everything lines up with His truth.
Scripture “Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
Encouragement If you feel like you haven’t heard from God lately, don’t be discouraged. He hasn’t stopped speaking; sometimes we just need to get better at listening. Think of it like tuning a radio—you just need to adjust your heart and stay focused on Him. Start your day with a simple prayer, asking Him to open your ears and your heart. Remember, God wants to talk to you. He loves you, He knows exactly where you are, and He is eager to guide you. Keep seeking Him, and you will find that He has been with you all along.
Hearing God’s voice is a beautiful, lifelong conversation. It isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being available.
Read the Bible to understand God’s character and truth.
Practice stillness so you can hear the quiet whisper of the Holy Spirit.
Obey the small things to build your trust and your “listening muscle.”
Check everything against the truth of the Bible to make sure you are on the right path.
God is always speaking. All you have to do is turn your heart toward Him and listen.
