Lessons from Titus

Imagine a harbor at night. It is dark, the water is rough, and ships are trying to find their way home. In the center of the harbor stands a lighthouse. It doesn’t do anything flashy—it simply stands firm, stays lit, and points the way.

The Apostle Paul sent his friend, Titus, to a place called Crete to do exactly that: to help the people there become lighthouses. Titus was like a captain, and Paul’s letter to him was the “captain’s manual.” Today, that manual teaches us how to be people who guide others toward God’s light.

1. The Quality of the Lighthouse

Paul didn’t ask Titus to find people who were perfect. He asked him to find people who were steady.

A lighthouse keeper is reliable. They are calm when the storm hits, they are honest when it’s tempting to lie, and they are kind to their family when no one is watching. These aren’t “superhero” traits; they are the result of a life connected to God.

  • Steady over Angry: When life gets rough, a lighthouse doesn’t panic. It stays fixed.

  • True North: A lighthouse points to the truth. In a world full of confusing paths, people are looking for someone whose life “points” to something real—that’s you.

  • Love for Goodness: You become what you feed your mind. If you feed on kindness and truth, your “light” will be steady and warm.

2. Navigating the Hidden Reefs

Paul warned Titus about “dangerous reefs”—people or attitudes that try to lead us off course. These are the shortcuts that seem easy: lying to get out of trouble, being selfish, or acting lazy.

Shortcuts feel like the easy way out, but they are like hidden rocks in the water. They might seem harmless for a moment, but they eventually wreck the ship. Staying on course means choosing the path of integrity, even when it takes more effort.

3. The Power of the “Flashlight”

You might think, “I’m not a leader, I’m just an ordinary person.” But the beauty of the lighthouse analogy is that you don’t need a huge budget or a fancy title to make a difference.

When you share a kind word, forgive someone who hurt you, or stand up for what is right, you are sharing your “flashlight.” You aren’t just helping that one person—you are making the whole world a little bit brighter. Your small, daily acts of faithfulness ripple out in ways you will never see.

4. You Are Never Alone on the Sea

If you feel like your light is flickering, or you’ve drifted off course, remember this: God is the ultimate Lighthouse. You don’t have to generate your own light; you just have to stay connected to the One who provides the power. He is your Anchor and your Compass. Whenever you feel lost, return to Him, and He will guide you back to the right path.

Scripture & Encouragement

Scripture “In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech.” — Titus 2:7-8

Encouragement You are called to be a lighthouse in your own corner of the world. It’s okay if your light doesn’t feel very bright today—the most important thing is that you keep standing firm and pointing toward the truth. God doesn’t need you to be a master navigator; He just needs you to be a faithful keeper of the light. Trust Him with your mistakes, let Him steady your heart, and keep shining. You have no idea how many people are looking for the direction you are pointing toward.

Summary

The journey of faith is like navigating a busy harbor. By following the “captain’s manual” left for Titus, we learn that Christian leadership and daily living are about being steady, honest, and kind. While the “shortcuts” of life may seem tempting, they only lead to trouble; true fulfillment comes from keeping our lives pointed toward God’s truth. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, serves as a light for others. Trust that God is your steady anchor, and allow Him to use you to brighten the world around you.
