Discovering the Treasure: A Simple Guide to Reading the Bible
Hello! My name is Choeun, and I am so happy to explore with you how to better understand the Bible. Think of the Bible as a treasure map. It is full of life-changing wisdom, comfort, and guidance. Sometimes, reading it can feel a bit overwhelming, but you don’t have to be a scholar to understand it. Let’s look at some simple ways to make your Bible time more meaningful and life-giving.
To Know God: The Bible shows us what God is like, how much He loves us, and what His plan is for our lives.
To Grow: It acts like a guide, showing us how to live in a way that makes God happy.
To Find Peace: When life gets tough, the Bible is a safe place to find hope and encouragement.
1. Start with Prayer Before you read, take a breath and talk to God. Ask Him to help you understand what you are reading. Since the Bible is a spiritual book, asking for the Holy Spirit’s help is the best way to open your heart to what it really means.
2. Choose a Translation That Speaks to You There are many ways to write the same thing. Find a Bible version that uses words you find easy to understand. You might also like a “Study Bible,” which has extra notes at the bottom of the page to explain tricky parts.
3. Read the “Big Picture” (Context) Don’t just pick one sentence and guess what it means. Look at what comes before and after it. Ask yourself: Who was writing this? Who were they talking to? Why did they write it? This helps you understand the true message instead of taking one idea out of its place.
4. Study What Interests You You don’t have to start at page one. If you are struggling with worry, look up what the Bible says about “peace.” If you need to forgive someone, look up “forgiveness.” Using a search tool online or a concordance in the back of your Bible makes this easy.
5. Make It Personal Don’t just read the words—think about them. Ask yourself: “How does this change the way I live today?” The goal isn’t just to fill your head with facts; it’s to let the truth change your heart.
6. Be Consistent Consistency is better than intensity. It is much better to read for just five minutes every day than to read for an hour only once a month. Pick a time that works for you, even if it is just while you drink your morning coffee.
7. Learn with Others You don’t have to do it alone! Joining a small group or reading with a friend can give you fresh ideas and keep you excited. It’s amazing how much more you see when you talk about it with others.
Scripture “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” — 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Encouragement If you ever feel like you aren’t “getting it” or you feel discouraged, please be patient with yourself. Learning to understand the Bible is a journey, not a race. God is not looking for perfection; He is looking for your heart. Even if you only understand one small verse, that one verse can change your entire day.
Remember, the Holy Spirit is your personal teacher. When you feel confused, just ask Him for clarity. God loves you, and He treasures the time you spend learning about Him. You are doing great—just keep showing up, keep an open heart, and let God’s love be the reason you keep reading.
Studying the Bible is one of the most rewarding habits you can build. It isn’t about being an expert; it’s about being a student of God’s love.
Invite God in: Always start with prayer.
Keep it simple: Find a translation you enjoy and read in context.
Apply it: Ask yourself how the words change your life today.
Stick with it: Small, consistent steps build a deep, lasting foundation.
God is with you every time you open those pages. Enjoy the process of getting to know Him better!
