The Importance of Rest

In our busy world, we often think that “being productive” is the most important thing. We feel guilty if we aren’t constantly checking things off our to-do list. But did you know that God actually commanded us to stop and rest?

The Bible teaches us about the “Sabbath”—a day set aside specifically for rest and renewal. It isn’t just a suggestion; it is a gift from God to help us stay healthy and close to Him.

Why Do We Need Rest?

  • To Remember Who is in Control: When you work seven days a week, it’s easy to feel like everything depends on you. When you stop to rest, you are saying, “God, You are the One who provides, not me.”

  • To Protect Our Health: God created our bodies to need rhythm. Just as the earth has night and day, we need work and rest. Without rest, we eventually burn out, become grumpy, and lose our focus on what really matters.

  • To Refresh Our Souls: Rest isn’t just about sleeping. It’s about doing things that fill your cup—like spending time in nature, laughing with friends, or simply sitting in silence. It’s time to move from “doing” to “being.”

How to Practice Biblical Rest

  1. Stop Working: Pick one day (or even a half-day) to put your work away. This includes emails, household chores, or big projects. Let them wait until tomorrow.

  2. Focus on God: Use your time of rest to talk to God. Go for a walk and thank Him for the beauty around you, or read a few pages of the Bible without feeling like you have to “study” it.

  3. Find Joy: God wants you to enjoy His creation. If a hobby, a meal with family, or reading a good book helps you feel renewed, do it! God created pleasure and rest for your benefit.

  4. Stop the Guilt: This is the hardest part. You might feel like you “should” be doing more. Remind yourself that God rested after He created the world, not because He was tired, but to show us the pattern for a balanced life. You are allowed to stop.

Scripture & Encouragement

Scripture “Then he said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.'” — Mark 2:27

Encouragement You are a human being, not a human “doing.” If you are feeling exhausted, please hear this: your worth is not measured by how much you get done. God loves you just as much when you are resting as He does when you are working. If you have been running on empty, give yourself permission to pause today. Turn off the noise, take a deep breath, and trust that God is taking care of everything while you take a break. He wants you to be refreshed, happy, and whole.

Summary

Rest is not a sign of laziness; it is an act of faith. By following God’s rhythm of rest, you will find that you are more peaceful, more patient, and more prepared for the work you do need to do.

  • Make rest a priority: It is a command, not an option.

  • Change your mindset: You aren’t just “not working”; you are intentionally renewing your relationship with God.

  • Embrace the gift: Enjoy the freedom that comes from trusting God enough to stop.

Take time this week to step back, breathe, and enjoy the rest that God has prepared for you!
