Winning the Battle: How to Handle Temptation
Everyone faces temptation. It is a part of being human. Even Jesus was tempted, so feeling tempted is not a sin—it’s just a challenge. The important thing is what we do when those feelings show up. We don’t have to fight these battles on our own; God gives us the tools to stand firm.
Temptation usually starts on the inside. It happens when we focus on things that aren’t good for us. The Bible explains that temptation is like a hook; it tries to pull us toward a wrong choice. The trick is to spot the “hook” before we get caught by it.
Use God’s Word as Your Shield: Jesus used the Bible to fight temptation when He was in the desert. When you memorize verses, you have truth ready in your mind. When a tempting thought comes, you can replace it with a promise from God.
Watch and Pray: Temptation often sneaks up when we are tired, stressed, or lonely. By staying in a habit of prayer, you keep your heart close to God. Prayer isn’t just asking for things; it’s asking for the strength to do the right thing when you feel weak.
Know When to Run: Sometimes, being “strong” actually means walking away. If you know a certain place, habit, or person makes it harder for you to do the right thing, choose to leave that situation. There is no shame in avoiding a trap.
Use Your “Team”: You were not meant to be a lone wolf. Find a trusted friend—a “Barnabas”—who can pray for you and check in on you. Being honest with someone else about your struggles takes away the power temptation has over you.
Trust the Way Out: God promises that He will never let you be tempted more than you can handle. He is always “faithful.” This means that in every single tempting moment, God has already provided a “way out.” Your job is to look for that door and take it.
Scripture “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” — 1 Corinthians 10:13
