Entitlement is the belief that we deserve something just because we want it. People have struggled with this for a long time. It often leads to frustration and makes us compare our lives to others. But is this how God wants us to live?
We often think, “If I do good things, good things should happen to me,” or “I worked hard, so I deserve this.” This is a trap. God’s blessings are based on His grace (a free gift), not on a formula or an obligation to pay us back.
Think back to when you were a child. Did you ever say, “Everyone else has it, why can’t I?” This habit of comparing ourselves to others doesn’t stop when we grow up. It leads to wanting what others have, which the Bible warns against (Exodus 20:17). Entitlement keeps us unhappy because we are always looking at what we don’t have.
Focus: 2-3, 7, 12, 17
Verses 2-3: Don’t let the world control your thoughts or pressures. As followers of Jesus, we live for Him and look forward to the rewards He has in heaven, not just things on earth.
Verse 7: Don’t judge your value by what you own. God looks at your heart. When we compare stuff, we miss what really matters.
Verse 12: Stop comparing yourself to others. It only makes you feel insecure or prideful. Jesus is our example, not other people.
Verse 17: True happiness comes from God. When we stop demanding things and start trusting Him, we find peace the world can’t give.
Focus: 6
Verse 6: Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Without Him, life feels empty. With Him, we find our true purpose.
Simple Instructions from the Bible:
Matthew 5:42 & Proverbs 22:9: Be generous and help those in need.
Matthew 28:19: Tell others about Jesus.
Sometimes we expect God to do things exactly how we want. But God’s plan is much better than our own. We should pray for His will to be done, not for Him to give us exactly what we think we “deserve.”
Focus: 2, 3-5, 8
Verse 2: Our hope is in Jesus, not in winning prizes on earth.
Verses 3-5: When things get hard, don’t complain. Difficult times help us grow and make our faith stronger.
Verse 8: Your value doesn’t come from your mistakes or your success. It comes from the fact that Jesus died for you. You are a child of God.
Focus: 4
Verse 4: God’s timing is perfect. We aren’t in control, and being impatient only makes us frustrated. Trust that God knows when to give you what you need.
Verses 1-8: There is a right time for everything. God is in charge of time. Our impatience comes from wanting things now, but we can rest knowing God has a plan for every season of our lives.
Entitlement keeps us stuck, always wanting more and never feeling satisfied. But the Bible tells us that true contentment is found only in Jesus. When we stop comparing, demanding, and expecting, we find real joy. Let’s stop chasing worldly things and start enjoying the peace that comes from God.
Take a moment to think: Where are you acting entitled? Are you comparing your life to someone else’s? Are you frustrated because God isn’t following your schedule? Talk to God about these struggles and ask Him to help you trust His timing instead.
