The Meaning of Sacrifice
Long ago, people offered lambs to God as a way to say, “I am sorry for my sins.” A farmer named Joram would carefully choose his best, strongest lamb to give to God. It was a difficult thing to do because he loved his animals, but he knew it was a way to show his obedience and his need for God’s forgiveness.
These sacrifices were important, but they weren’t the end of the story. They were a sign pointing toward something much bigger that would happen later.
One day, Jesus was born. He lived a perfect life, full of kindness and love. He was the “Lamb of God.” Unlike the animals offered in the past, Jesus offered Himself. He gave His own life as a sacrifice for everyone. Because of Jesus, we don’t need to offer animal sacrifices anymore. His sacrifice was perfect, and it was enough to cover the sins of the whole world forever.
We don’t give lambs or goats to God anymore, but the spirit of sacrifice is still very important. Today, God asks us to “sacrifice” the things that keep us from being close to Him. This might mean letting go of:
Bad habits or selfish desires: Anything we put before God in our hearts.
Our time and resources: Giving back a portion of what we have is a way of saying, “Thank you, God, for providing everything.”
Our own plans: Sometimes we have to let go of what we want so we can follow what God wants.
The most important sacrifice we can give today is a heart that is ready to change. God doesn’t want empty rituals; He wants us to be honest with Him. He wants us to admit our mistakes, turn away from them, and put Him first in our lives.
When we let go of the things that don’t matter, we make room for the things that do—God’s love, His peace, and His presence. Sacrifice is really just a way of saying, “God, I love You more than anything else.”
Scripture “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!'” — John 1:29
Encouragement You are already loved and forgiven because of what Jesus did for you. You don’t have to “earn” God’s love through hard work; you simply get to respond to it. Today, ask yourself: “Is there anything holding me back from fully trusting God?” Giving those things to Him isn’t a loss—it is a way to clear the path so you can experience the full, beautiful life He has for you.
This lesson explores the history of sacrifice, moving from the Old Testament tradition of offering lambs to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus. Jesus became the perfect Lamb, freeing us from the weight of our sins. Today, we are called to a new kind of sacrifice: giving up our own selfish desires and idols to put God first. It is a journey of letting go of the small things so that we can receive the great gift of God’s love and a life full of purpose.
