Fasting is a powerful spiritual practice, but it is often misunderstood. Some people think it is just about “giving up food,” but in the Bible, it is much more than that. Fasting is a way to say to God, “I want more of You than I want anything else.” It is a deliberate choice to set aside your physical needs for a short time so that you can focus entirely on your relationship with Him.
Fasting is not a way to “earn” points with God or to force Him to do what we want. Instead, it is a way to prepare your own heart.
To focus: By taking away the time and energy you usually spend on eating, you create extra space for prayer and reading the Bible.
To show humility: It is a way of saying, “God, I depend on You for everything, even my daily bread.”
To seek clarity: Throughout the Bible, people fasted when they needed God’s guidance, needed to repent, or were facing a very difficult situation.
There is no “one size fits all” way to fast. The most important thing is your heart’s attitude.
Set a Clear Purpose: Before you start, ask yourself: Why am I doing this? Are you seeking wisdom for a decision? Do you want to feel closer to God? Write it down so you can stay focused when you feel hungry or distracted.
Choose Your Type of Fast:
Normal Fast: Most people choose to skip certain meals or go without food for a set period, but they continue to drink water.
Partial Fast: Some people choose to restrict certain foods (like the “Daniel Fast,” where you eat only vegetables and water) rather than skipping all food.
Note: If you have health concerns, please talk to a doctor first. Fasting should never be dangerous to your body.
Make it Private: Jesus taught that fasting is a private act of love between you and God. You don’t need to announce it or try to impress others. Keep it humble and between you and your Creator.
Use the Time Wisely: Fasting is not just about what you give up; it’s about what you add. When you feel hungry, let that be a physical reminder to pray. Use the time you would have spent eating or preparing food to read your Bible or sit in quiet reflection.
You will likely feel hungry, tired, or even a bit grumpy. That is normal! When those feelings hit, don’t get discouraged. Use those moments to talk to God. Tell Him, “I feel weak right now, but I am choosing to lean on Your strength.” Fasting is a great way to discover that God is the One who truly sustains you.
When your fast is over, don’t rush into a huge meal. Eat something light and easy on your stomach. More importantly, take a few minutes to thank God for the time you spent with Him. Think about what you learned and how you want to keep that closeness even after the fast is over.
Scripture “But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” — Matthew 6:17-18
Encouragement Fasting is a journey, and God loves that you are taking time to seek Him. If you find it hard or feel like you didn’t do it “perfectly,” please don’t worry. God looks at your heart, not at how perfectly you skipped a meal. He sees your desire to be closer to Him, and He honors that. Be patient with yourself as you grow in this practice. You are setting aside the things of this world to pursue the presence of God—that is a beautiful, noble goal, and He will surely meet you in that space.
Biblical fasting is a tool for spiritual growth, not a chore.
Define your “Why”: Fasting is most effective when you have a clear purpose in prayer.
Keep it simple: Choose a method that works for your health and lifestyle.
Focus on God: Replace your physical hunger with spiritual nourishment through prayer and Scripture.
Stay humble: Do it for God’s eyes only, not for the praise of others.
Take this time to grow, to listen, and to trust that God is working in you in a special way!
